An open letter from Louise Lee, co-founder of SOS-NC--February 2008

Dear friends:

I hope this letter finds you well and enjoying the start of 2008! If last year was any indication, the New Year promises to hold another action-packed spring for supporters of the 2004 School Calendar Law.

What did 2007 bring? First of all, early in the legislative session, the House of Representatives passed House Bill 359, Restore Flexibility to School Calendars by an overwhelming majority of 77 to 35. This law opens the door for every school system in North Carolina to potentially receive a waiver from the August 25 school start date. All this bill needs to become law is passage by the Senate and Governor Easley's signature this spring!

Secondly, Judge Howard Manning ruled in favor of parents in a lawsuit concerning mandating year-round school attendance in Wake County. Manning’s ruling, based in part on the school calendar law and the constitutional right to a uniform education, has been appealed by the Wake County Public School System and a ruling by the Court of Appeals is expected within the next two months. If the current ruling is overturned, mandatory year-round school attendance could spread statewide.

Your action-based support was the key to the passage of the school calendar law, and is the key to keeping it intact. If, however, you feel that you could also contribute financially, it would be greatly appreciated. This will enable us to keep our updated website in order, to increase our efforts at the General Assembly, and to shore-up communication state-wide.

The powerful groups that oppose SOS-NC are once again pulling out all stops in hopes of putting an end to our cause. Your commitment to all that we stand for is immeasurable, and must continue to remain strong if we are to hold our ground.

Thank you for considering a contribution during this pivotal period.

Thank you!
Louise Lee
